I had a malamute as a kid, up until I was 14 (she lived to 19 years of age). She had a special bark/howl when there were hot air balloons passing over the house then we knew to run outside and see them. She was awesome. |

@nettramp123 Dogs with long hair actually manage the climate better than dogs with short hair. The reason is because they have two coats. The one you can really see is the over coat. The one that keeps them warm is the undercoat. In the spring, when it gets warm, dogs with undercoats shed them in a process called blowing a coat. It happens twice a year in anticipation of seasonal change. Long haired dogs are fine in the heat (to an extent). |

Well i live in Australia where it REALLY gets hot & my malamute manages the heat just fine. Would never consider shaving her, wouldnt want 2 risk skin cancer. |

@nettramp123 If you're living in that kind of climate, I would definitely take the dog out for frequent swimming in the summer, maybe even keep a pool in your backyard so the dog can swim on hot days. Jog during the cooler times of the day, like early morning and late evening. Even consider getting the dog shaved during the summer. That's a lot of bulk to heat up! |
